Calendar years run from January to December, so the two players are compared over the same dates even when their club seasons follow different schedules. The 2026 figures include published records through 29 October 2026; compare them with completed years with that in mind.
Club + country includes senior competitive club games and recognized senior internationals. The league filter excludes cups and MLS playoffs. All-years totals combine the selected scope across every displayed year. Per-90 rates use the combined statistic multiplied by 90 and divided by the combined minutes. A zero appearance count means no senior appearance in that year; an undefined rate is shown as a dash.

Where does the 2011 goal gap come from?
The Messi-minus-Ronaldo gap is +2 in club football and -3 for their national teams. Adding those separate samples gives the overall difference of -1.
Adding international matches reverses the club-only leader in this year. A headline that omits the scope would therefore give a different answer to a different question.
Within club football, the league gap is -12; the remaining club competitions account for +14. League goals are already included in club goals and must not be added again.
These are differences between the players’ goal totals, not shares of their teams’ goals. They show where a lead accumulates; they cannot establish which competition was harder.

Separate opportunity from frequency
At the smaller shared sample of 5,088 minutes, Messi’s recorded rate gives 48.55 goals and Ronaldo’s gives 60. This calculation scales both rates to the same playing time; these are not goals actually scored.
Equal minutes remove the difference in playing-time volume. They do not equalise opponents, chances, competitions or responsibilities. Use this alongside the actual totals, not as a prediction.
What the final pass changes
Goals plus recorded assists give Messi 96 and Ronaldo 78. Counting goals alone gives a Messi-minus-Ronaldo difference of -1; including assists changes it to +18.
A positive difference favours Messi; a negative one favours Ronaldo. Goals and assists are different actions, so their sum is a description of recorded final actions, not a complete creativity or player-quality score.
What changed from the previous period?
| Player | Goals | Assists | Minutes played | Goals per 90 minutes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Messi | -1 | +20 | +856 | -0.15 |
| Ronaldo | +12 | 0 | +42 | +0.21 |
Each change is this period minus the previous one, using the same scope. A lower goal total can coexist with a higher rate when minutes fall. These differences do not identify the cause of a change.
Reproduce this analysis
Equal-time goals = recorded goals × the smaller minute total ÷ the player’s minutes. Combined output = goals + source-defined assists. Rates and differences are calculated before rounding. All inputs come from the linked period record.
